Long Eared Owl

Found widely across Ireland year-round, the long-eared owl is the owl species most commonly sighted in the country.

Identification

At first glance, it resembles a smaller, less vibrant Great Tit. Its back, tail, and wings display shades of grey with a subtle greenish tint, adorned with two small white wingbars. The underside appears dirty white with a hint of brownish wash. Its most notable feature is the head pattern, boasting a black crown, bib, and side of the nape, while the nape patch and cheeks may exhibit varying degrees of yellow. It possesses a small, pointed bill and bluish-grey legs.
